This cannot be! The White Rose cannot be stopped so soon, with so much left unfinished. Oh how did such ill-fortune befall upon us? A while ago our movement was steadily growing in recognition, our goals were shared by an increasing number of people, and our missions were undetected by the police. But now! How did the entire circumstance turn around? If only that wretched custodian, Jakob Schmid, did not happen to see Sophie and Hans distributing the leaflets, then our movement now would still be unstoppable! However, now it is too late to think about the past. The damage is done. Two months ago, on February 22, Hans, Sophie, and Christopher Probst were all beheaded in Stadelheim Prison. Today, April 19, I was brought before the People’s Court and publicly humiliated for the articles I had written. To make matters worse, my lawyer quit and a random lawyer not familiar with the case was chosen to come to my defense. In the end, I was given the death sentence for insurrection. On July 13, everything will end. However, I do not worry as much for myself as for my wife and children. They will be without income or support. And yet I can do nothing besides sit in this wretched prison cell! All I can do now is hope someone will come aid my family. Aside from my family woes, I have one last task to accomplish. I know that I must finish the biography I am writing about the German mathematician and philosopher Leibniz. I have requested for my date of execution to be pushed back so I can finish the book. My request was denied. My execution date is set. Destiny cannot be changed. I will embrace death bravely.
