Now that you know my secret, I shall tell you more about my origins and myself. I was born to German parents in Chur, Switzerland. By the age of four, my family moved to Stuttgart. When my father died while I was still attending the Gymnasium, a German college prepatory school, my mother moved my three siblings and I to Munich. During this time, I had rickets and diptheria, thus I walk about with a limp in my left foot and numbness in my right hand. It is due to these handicaps that I was excused from military service in WWI, and thus lost the chance to fight hard for and offer my life to my glorious country Germany. Continuing on, during my youth I was particularly interested in music, philosophy, and psychology. Interest in these subjects paved the road to my future, for I later obtained my doctorate and became a professor at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.

I married the lovely Clara Schlickenrider in 1929, and we had two children, Birgit and Wolfgang, as proof of our love. Eight years later, I was offered a position at the Institute of German Research but I quit after one year. The reason? They gave me the position to write and publicize songs for the Nazi regime! How could I carry out such a task? The answer, of course, was I couldn’t. Thus, I was forced to return to the University of Munich and resume my former position. However, this event did not put a damper on my passion for teaching. This passion eventually attracted members of the White Rose to me, who asked me to join them in their fight. I consented. From 1942 to 1943, our White Rose group wrote and distributed six leaflets anonymously. You may be wondering as to why we only lasted for about a year. It is not because of any loss of interest or a heightened fear of being discovered. No, these are reasons only a coward and one who doesn’t love their country enough would give. Our White Rose group fought to the very end, braving the fears of the police while others turned away, continuing on when others would have stopped, held on to a dream that others have already let go. We, the White Rose, did not stop until death met with us face to face.
